YARMOUTH — Becca Bell scored the game’s first goal 14 minutes into the second half, and Danielle Torres added a goal and an assist as top-seeded Yarmouth scored three times in the final three minutes to pull away from No. 8 Gray-New Gloucester 4-0 in a Western Maine Class B girls’ soccer quarterfinal Tuesday.

The Clippers (12-2-1) had a number of chances in the latter part of the opening half and early minutes of the second with nothing to show for it until Bell teamed with Ricki Pierce on a textbook set play off a corner kick.

Pierce took the corner from the right and sent it high across the front of the crease, where an unmarked Bell in the middle-left headed it sharply inside the right post at 13:49.

“That corner kick was really nice,” Yarmouth Coach Rich Smith said. “We needed something like that to break the ice.”

Late in the half, the Patriots (5-8-2) tried to open things up to tie, but Torres blocked a clearing attempt and sent it into the box for Mo McNaboe.

McNaboe went in alone on Sammi Wilkins, and when Wilkins came out to challenge, McNaboe made a nice touch move to her left foot and slipped the ball inside the left post to make it 2-0 with 2:55 left.

“That was a great finish by Mo,” said Torres. “In the first half, we knew they’d pack it in on defense, and we just had to keep our composure.

“It’s hard to generate any offense when it’s crowded in front, but Mo’s goal got our momentum going.”

Torres scored unassisted with 1:01 remaining, collecting a loose ball in the left side of the box and nailing the high far corner.

Devin Simsarian closed out the scoring 30 seconds later with another unassisted goal, beating Wilkins from point-blank range.

“The game showed what Yarmouth is capable of,” said Gray Coach Kiaran McCormack. “They have a lot of very talented players, and our plan was to try to keep the game close.”

Seven of the Patriots’ starters were freshmen or sophomores, and McCormack said of his squad, “We’ve got a lot of young players, and they’ve come a long way. This is the first time the school has made the playoffs in seven years, and to be able to play a team like Yarmouth is a big step.

“Our seniors have set a good foundation for us and they have to be proud of what they’ve accomplished.”

In the first half, Wilkins made a leaping save on a Simsarian header off a Courtney Barker corner, added a diving grab of a Tess Merrill shot, and Simsarian hit the right post on two occasions, which kept the game scoreless.
