Sunday River is nation’s first resort open for skiing
As of 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry was the first resort in the country to open.
This is the fourth time in four years that Sunday River has been the first resort on the East Coast to open, and the first time nationally.
The October opening took the work of 74 snow guns over a 19-hour period starting at 9 p.m. Thursday until Friday afternoon.
Sunday River will continue to make snow as weather permits, and lift tickets are available for $25 at the Barker Base Lodge.
Chairlifts are open from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
PREP SCHOOLS
BOYS’ SOCCER: Chris Wild collected two goals and one assist to lead Berwick Academy (9-1) to a 6-1 victory over Chapel Hill (0-7-3) at Waltham, Mass.
Kyle Mullaney and Blake Downey each added a goal and an assist for the Bulldogs.
HOCKEY
QMJHL: Jean-Gabriel Pageau broke a 3-3 tie on a power play with 8:46 left in the third period, giving the Gatineau Olympiques a 4-3 win over the visiting Lewiston Maineiacs.
The Maineiacs rallied from a 3-0 deficit on second-period goals by Michael Chaput, Antoine Houde-Caron and Jess Tanguy.
COLLEGES
WOMEN’S HOCKEY: The visiting University of Maine Black Bears (4-3) scored three goals in the second period for a 3-1 win over Niagara University (0-4-1).
Jennie Gallo, Brittany Dougherty and Myriam Croussette each had a goal and Brittany Ott made 18 saves for Maine.
GOLF
PGA: Jonathan Byrd shot an 8-under 63 to take the second-round lead at 13 under in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open in Las Vegas.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Corey Pavin shot a 6-under-par 66 for a one-shot lead after the first round of the Administaff Small Business Classic in The Woodlands, Texas.
LPGA: Mika Miyazato and Jee Young Lee each shot 5-under 66 to lead after the first round of the Sime Darby in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
SOCCER
ROONEY SIGNS: Wayne Rooney agreed to a five-year contract with Manchester United, keeping him at the Premier League club until June 2015. Rooney, 24, said this week that he did not intend to extend his deal beyond 2012 because he was unhappy that United hadn’t improved its roster, but he changed his mind after “intensive discussions” with the club.
MISCELLANEOUS
The New York Mets narrowed their search for a new general manager to baseball executive Sandy Alderson and former Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes. … Roger Federer recovered from a set down to beat Stanislas Wawrinka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 and reach the Stockholm Open semifinals. … Ana Ivanovic lost 6-3, 6-1 to Julia Goerges in the Luxembourg Open quarterfinals.
