FAIRFIELD — After being outgained in the first half, Lawrence held Messalonskee to 35 second-half yards Friday night en route to a 19-6 victory in an Eastern Class A regular-season finale.

The Bulldogs (8-0) will have home-field advantage in the regional playoffs that start next week. Messalonskee (5-3) may have to play a quarterfinal on the road.

Messalonskee trailed 7-6 at the half due to a 65-yard punt return from Shaun Carroll, but otherwise controlled the ball and the momentum.

“We had some opportunities in the first half that I thought we should have capitalized on that would have helped us in the second half,” Messalonskee Coach Wes Littlefield said.

Much as it did last week when the Bulldogs knocked off Bangor, the second half belonged to Lawrence. And it came without a pair of two-way starters, Mark Yandian and Josh Perry, who were injured in last week’s game.

“We knew we had to come out with heart,” quarterback Spencer Carey said. “We had to do it last week against Bangor. We knew they had a high-powered running back and we had to come out and stop him.”

Carey, who rushed for 89 yards on 12 carries, put the game out of reach when he capped a long Lawrence drive with a 1-yard plunge with 61/2 minutes left.
