It was a close one, but in the end, it was the Thornton Academy Trojans who will be moving on in the Class A West field hockey playoffs.
On Oct. 19, the No. 3 Trojans nipped No. 6 South Portland 2-1 to advance to the semifinals of the field hockey playoffs. On Oct. 23, the Trojans will be taking on No. 7 Bonny Eagle, which upset No. 2 Westbrook 4-3 in triple overtime on Monday. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Saco.
Against the Red Riots, the Trojans led the whole way, but that lead was never comfortable as the feisty Riots kept up the pressure all game.
Thornton Academy got off to a 1-0 lead in the first half when Morgan Dube managed to push one past Riots’ keeper Lani Edwards for the only goal of the half.
Coming out of the halftime break, neither team could manage a goal until there was just over 7:30 left to go in the game. Thornton got what proved to be the game winner when Breanna Thibodeau scored off a rebound to make it 2-0.
South Portland made things close with just under two minutes left in the game when Jaclyn Salevsky beat Trojan keeper Abbey Siulinski, but they were not able to get the equalizer, and the Trojans won the game and moved on to the semifinals.
