SOUTH BERWICK – On a night better suited for the running game, Scarborough High had success passing Friday.

Dillon Russo threw three first-half scoring passes as the Red Storm built a three-touchdown lead and held off Marshwood for a 27-14 victory in a wet Western Class A football game.

Scarborough (6-1) scored on the first and last plays of the second quarter. In between, the Red Storm scored on a fourth-down screen pass from the 26.

Conor McCann caught a 22-yard scoring pass from Russo with one second left in the half.

Scarborough’s running game took over in the second half. Dennis Liu gained 115 yards in the second half and scored on an 8-yard run that made it 27-0 in the third quarter. Mark Pearson and Scott Thibeault also helped the Red Storm control the clock.

“The line was responsible for getting our running backs the yards,” said Liu. “I know I’ve said that several times this season but it’s true.”

The Red Storm continued their turnaround season and can reverse their 1-7 record of a year ago with a victory against Kennebunk in their regular-season finale next week.

“It feels great to do it with these guys,” said Liu, a senior tri-captain who had an interception in the end zone early in the game.

Marshwood (2-5) got two touchdown runs from David Mick — a 59-yarder in the third quarter and a 28-yarder in the fourth. He finished with 174 yards on 18 carries.

“I liked the way the players battled back,” said Marshwood Coach John Caverly. “We have some injuries but we overcame them to have a strong second half.”

The win solidified the Red Storm’s playoff standing in the Crabtree points.

“I think we were already in before the game,” said Coach Lance Johnson.

As for his team’s passing in the first half, Johnson said: “We thought we’d take a chance. We dropped some balls, but we also made some nice catches on a night when it was hard to hold on.”

The key touchdown was the one just before halftime, when the Red Storm converted on third-and-17 from the Marshwood 22, with McCann making a nice over-the-shoulder catch.

The Red Storm intercepted two passes and recovered three Marshwood fumbles. They lost one fumble.

The Hawks couldn’t take advantage of a bad snap on a Scarborough punt early in the game. Taking over on the Scarborough 20, Marshwood couldn’t move, and Liu intercepted a pass on fourth down.

The Red Storm also fumbled while going in for a touchdown midway through the third quarter. The ball went through the back of the end zone for a touchback.
