SANFORD – They scored on long, clock-eating drives. And they tallied with lightning-quick plays.

The Redskins of Sanford High could not be stopped Friday night, as Sanford soared by Kennebunk 38-19 at Stephen A. Cobb Stadium.

Four Sanford running backs accounted for 507 yards rushing. With their ball-control offense and three Rams turnovers, Kennebunk could not catch up, even with quarterback Matt Dube throwing for 297 yards and three touchdowns. Justin Carlson led Sanford with 198 yards rushing on only nine carries.

Tailback Shawn Goodrich rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries. Goodrich also played quarterback for one play. He threw a 54-yard touchdown pass to Carlson on the last play of the first half.

Running back Alex Shain rushed 13 times for 111 yards, and fullback Aaron Marshall added 61 yards on nine carries.

“I was impressed with how hard their backs ran,” Kennebunk Coach Joe Rafferty said. “And their offensive line stayed with their blocks.

“We thought we would be able to throw the football, but we didn’t have it enough times.”

While Dube was airing it out, including 11 completions to 6-foot-3 receiver Vann Brazz, the Rams ran the ball only seven times, gaining zero yards.

Sanford (3-4) stopped a four-game losing streak and will look for an even record when the Redskins end their season next Friday at Massabesic.

“Three of games were close, but we didn’t play to our potential,” Carlson said. “Now we’re back on track.”

Kennebunk dropped to 2-5.

The Rams had the ball for only 46 seconds of the first quarter. Sanford took the opening kickoff and drove 78 yards on 17 plays, using 8 minutes and 27 seconds. After the drive stayed alive on a pass interference call, Goodrich scored from the 3.

Kennebunk fumbled the ensuing kickoff. Sanford drove 41 yards, capped by Goodrich’s 5-yard run, for a 14-0 lead.

A Goodrich 13-yard touchdown run made it 20-0, but the Rams drove 82 yards on the next drive, with Dube hitting Brazz for a 13-yard touchdown, closing to 20-6.

Sanford had only two more offensive plays in the half and scored on both of them. Carlson, on an inside reverse handoff from Goodrich, burst through for a 74-yard score. After a Kennebunk drive stalled at the Sanford 46 with 8 seconds to go, Goodrich threw the bomb to Carlson for a 32-6 halftime lead.

“We had a shot. We made it 20-6,” Rafferty said. “And then I don’t think we touched a kid. Defensively, we’ve struggled all year.”

Sanford Coach Mike Fallon said his team’s close losses had hurt, “but credit to the kids and the coaches. They kept fighting.”

Dube’s two touchdown passes in the second half went to Ethan Drigotas (38 yards) and Nicco DeLorenzo (10 yards).
