SOUTH PORTLAND
‘Dave Deschaine’ property will be offered at auction

A real estate foreclosure auction has been scheduled for the commercial property of David J. Deschaine, the roofing contractor who is known for his TV ads with the tag line “Keep out the rain. Call Dave Deschaine.”

The property includes gutter and vinyl siding inventory and a commercial building with offices on about four-tenths of an acre on Dunscombe Street. Keenan Auction Co. has scheduled a preview for Oct. 21 and plans to hold the auction Nov. 4.

The auction is part of the process of liquidating under Chapter 7 bankruptcy, Deschaine said.

He said he will continue to operate a scaled-down version of the business out of his home, next to the commercial property.

Deschaine said his financial problems stem from starting a 13-lot subdivision in Lewiston in 2005, along with a second business location, before the housing market weakened.

He said he used his commercial property in South Portland as collateral.

Probe led to arrests of mother, son for drugs, police say

An investigation of drug trafficking in a hotel near the Maine Mall led to the arrests of a 60-year-old woman from Massachusetts and her son and the seizure of drugs and cash.

Mattie Brown of Randolph, Mass., was arrested Sunday and charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin and trafficking in cocaine. Her son, Robert Brown, 39, also from Massachusetts, was charged with refusal to submit to arrest and detention.

South Portland police Lt. Todd Bernard said the department did a brief investigation after receiving an anonymous tip of possible drug activity. He said the arrests were made during a traffic stop around 12:30 p.m. Sunday on Western Avenue, near the Portland line.

Police say they searched the hotel room where Brown had been staying and seized more than 50 grams of heroin, an ounce of cocaine, several OxyContin and oxycodone pills and close to $10,000 in cash.

Mattie Brown was held in the Cumberland County Jail on $100,000 cash bail.
