YORK – One way to describe the Greely boys’ soccer team is opportunistic.
The Rangers took just three shots, but scored with two of them, and goalie Elijah Leverett came up with a huge save in the final minutes as his team secured a 2-1 win over York during inter-class play on Thursday.
“It’s been that way most of the year,” said Ranger Sean Ross, who scored his team’s first goal. “We try to capitalize on the opportunities we get.”
Another word Coach Mike Andreasen used to describe his team was resilient. Neither squad scored in the first half, which made it a span of five scoreless halves for Class A Greely (6-4-1).
In the second half, the Class B Wildcats (6-3-1) got on the board when Pierce Twohig netted a goal off a corner kick with 31:03 left to play.
“I thought they were resilient,” Andreasen said. “We got down a goal, and we don’t score many goals.”
In fact, the Rangers were coming off being shut out in back-to-back games against Falmouth and Cape Elizabeth.
And they didn’t get many good chances in the first half on Thursday as York carried most of the play.
Then Ross broke the scoreless streak just more than 10 minutes into the second half.
A pass in behind the York defense created a foot race between Ross and Wildcat goalie Noah Rickerich.
Ross beat Rickerich to the ball and one-touched a shot into the open net to tie it up 1-1 with 28:52 left.
“I did all I could to get my body in front of him,” Ross said.
The action went back and forth after that. Then the Rangers were awarded a penalty kick when York’s Kyle Robinson was issued a red card for a hand ball in the penalty area.
Robinson had been beaten in the box, fell, and appeared to reach out with his hands to stop a shot by a Greely player.
Jonathan Coyne converted on the penalty kick, and the Rangers were up 2-1 with 16:56 left.
The Wildcats had a couple of great chances to tie after that. The first came on a corner kick with 3:30 left, but the shot went just wide right of the goal.
The second chance came when Twohig broke in on the right side of the box.
Leverett saw one of his defenders forcing Twohig to the outside, so he came off his line to challenge the shot. Twohig shot low and Leverett was in good position to make the sliding kick save with 1:45 remaining in the game.
