KITTERY — The Maine and New Hampshire governors are signing executive orders creating a task force to find ways to pay for replacing or rehabilitating bridges across the Piscataqua River, which forms part of the border between the two states.

Maine Gov. John Baldacci and New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch announced the orders today in Portsmouth, N.H. Maintaining the three bridges that connect the two states is a shared responsibility.

Both executive orders recognize the need to replace the Memorial Bridge, which connects Kittery and downtown Portsmouth, and to replace or significantly rehabilitate the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge, which includes a rail line serving Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Both also recognize the need to maintain the Piscataqua Bridge, which carries Interstate 95 traffic.

The task force must report to the governors by Dec. 15.
