Greely High has had one winning football season in the previous four years, and it did not look good for the Rangers early in their game with York. After going three plays and punting to the Wildcats, York drove 52 yards with ease for a 6-0 score.

But this year’s group of Rangers is poised.

“We didn’t panic,” Greely Coach Dave Higgins said. “We believe in our offense. We started running the plays. We told the kids we have to believe in what we’re doing.”

Greely’s offense not only came up with big plays in its 21-6 win, but the Rangers ate up almost 15 minutes of the second half, limiting York’s chances for a comeback.

The Rangers (4-1) have exceeded five wins only once in their varsity history (7-3 in 2005), but most of their remaining schedule is not easy. Greely travels to 5-0 Mountain Valley this Friday night. The Falcons have outscored their opponents, 212-12.

THE SCARBOROUGH HIGH boys, Cheverus High girls and Kennebunk’s Abbey Leonardi enjoyed victories in the massive Festival of Champions meet in Belfast on Saturday. Featuring teams from Canada and New England, the boys’ race had 350 runners, the girls’ 375.

Leonardi won in a meet-record time of 17:58.35, breaking Erica Jesseman of Scarborough’s record of 18:25.99 (2006). Runner-up Emily Durgin of Cheverus also broke the meet record, finishing in 18:21.90.

The Stags’ Fiona Hendry placed fourth as Cheverus took the team title with 74 points, well ahead of John Bapst (196).

The Scarborough boys won with 133, to second-place Falmouth’s 181. Madison High’s Matt McClintock won in 16:06.07.

Falmouth’s Tim Follo was the top finisher from southern Maine with a fifth (16:29.51). Scarborough had two in the top 12 with Nick Morris sixth (16:34.44) and Tom Hague 12th (16:51.67).

DEERING GOT a boost when Renaldo Lowry and Trey Thomes played in Saturday’s football game against Thornton Academy.

Lowry, a wide receiver, dislocated his toe the week before against Windham. There was some thought that Lowry would miss the game. But he was on the field and made his presence felt right away when he picked up his own fumble in the backfield and picked up 30 yards on Deering’s second play.

Thomes broke some bones in his left arm in the first preseason scrimmage and was playing for the first time. He started in the secondary while wearing a soft cast.

Deering (4-1) jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead and never looked back in a 35-6 win over Thornton Academy (4-1).

Asked how his toe felt after the game, Lowry said: “It hurts.”

WITH TOP running back Zach Bean out with an injury, and his two backups dinged up as well, Scarborough Coach Lance Johnson dug deep into his team’s depth chart for a replacement, especially when the Red Storm went into the wildcat formation.

“The kid had to be able to run,” said Johnson.

Sophomore Dillion Russo fit that bill.

A defensive starter at cornerback — where he had two interceptions in one game and led the Red Storm with 11 tackles in their win over Biddeford — Russo stepped into the spot and led Scarborough to its 33-0 win over Gorham on a wet, windy Friday night.

He rushed for 117 yards, breaking two 33-yard runs on Scarborough’s final scoring drive, and threw for two TDs.

Like most sophomores, Russo didn’t speak too much about his performance, giving the offensive line all the credit.

Johnson, however, said it wasn’t unexpected. He said, “He’s just a tough, competitive kid. He did a heck of a job. We have a lot of kids like that.”
