SCARBOROUGH – This, said senior tight end Mike Cyr, is the year everyone has been waiting for. This is the year in which Scarborough High’s football program has taken a very big step.
Cyr caught two touchdown passes Friday night as the Red Storm ignored a whipping wind that turned umbrellas inside out and a piercing rain that drenched everyone, pulling away from Gorham in the second half, 33-0.
The victory improved Scarborough’s record to 4-1, marking the first time the Red Storm have won four games in Western Class A.
“Everyone knew that we had a lot of talent, that we could be a good team,” said Cyr, who also had an interception to stop a Gorham drive. “And we’ve had great support from the community. This is what we’ve been waiting for.”
Scarborough had won only six games the previous four seasons, including just one last year.
“I’m really happy for the kids,” said first-year head coach Lance Johnson. “They’ve been working extremely hard and this was a very big goal.”
Gorham (0-5) played a gallant game, especially in the first half, which ended with Scarborough ahead 7-0. The Rams ran the ball hard behind Nick Kilborn and Kamron Alexander and drove to a first down at the Scarborough 14 in the second quarter. But an illegal procedure penalty set them back five yards, then Cyr stepped up. On fourth down from the 11, he intercepted a pass and returned it 48 yards up the right sideline.
“I was just in the right spot at the right time,” he said. “A little luck there.”
Maybe, but it certainly deflated the Rams, who got only three first downs the rest of the game.
“We’re young, and things like that happen,” said Gorham Coach Dave Kilborn. “But we’ve got to learn to overcome adversity. That’s the next step we have to take.”
Gorham’s defense held after the interception, but a blocked punt gave Scarborough the ball at the Rams 24. On third-and-11, Dillion Russo dropped back and lofted a perfect pass to Cyr in the right back corner of the end zone. Cyr — a Division I prospect according to his coach — dived to make an over-the-shoulder catch for the first touchdown with 2:41 left in the first half. Nathan Provencher’s PAT kick made it 7-0.
“It was a perfect ball,” said Cyr. “Dillion threw it to where only I could get it.”
Russo, a sophomore who has started on defense and is known more as a runner, threw another touchdown pass in the third quarter — a 45-yarder to Conor McCann — and also scored two rushing touchdowns in the second half.
He had a 32-yard run early in the third quarter, when he started right and cut back to the left. He finished with 117 yards rushing, all but three in the second half.
“The line was just opening great holes and I hit them,” said Russo.
Scarborough scored 20 points in the third quarter, with Cyr catching an 18-yard touchdown pass from Jack Adams. “We just wanted to finish strong,” he said.
Gorham, meanwhile, couldn’t keep up.
“I thought in the first half we played a great game, with a lot of heart and passion,” Kilborn said. “In the second half, some things happened. They had some momentum switches and we couldn’t answer.”
