Maine’s community colleges are asking for state aid increases of about $2 million for each of the next two years to supplement a budget made tighter by growing student numbers.
Trustees from the Maine Community College System today will weigh in on a systemwide budget request that asks for 3.5 percent state aid increases for each of the next two years.
The seven-campus network is receiving $54.7 million from the state this academic year, down from the $56.2 million it received in 2008-09.
If the budget request passes muster with legislators and a new governor, the community college system’s state aid package would rise to $56.6 million for the 2011-12 academic year and $58.6 million for 2012-13.
The community college system has seven campuses — in Auburn, Bangor, Calais, Fairfield, Presque Isle, South Portland and Wells — that award two-year, associate’s degrees.
The budget request would help the community college system cover the cost of current operations, said Helen Pelletier, a community college system spokeswoman.
