GORHAM – The first restoration of the original slate roof of historic Robie Andrews Hall on the Gorham campus of the University of Southern Maine was completed last week.

Robert Caswell, a university spokesman, said proceeds from the sale of the university’s Portland Hall, a former residence hall, were used to pay for the $455,000 cost of restoring the roof on the Gothic-style building.

Robie Hall opened in 1898 with Andrews added to the name in January 1916. Caswell said Robie Andrews Hall is one of several buildings in the Gorham Campus Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the oldest university residence hall, serving some 200 students and it also houses the university’s Department of Art.

A brief ceremony last week included placing a time capsule. Roof Systems of Maine was the general contractor. The Maine-based firm WBRC Architects and Engineers provided architectural and engineering services.

The Department of Art also was renovated. This separate project included a new exterior entrance to the art studios and labs, air quality and safety improvements to a sculpture studio and metals shop, restoration of the first floor gallery, as well as flooring, electrical and lighting improvements. The project cost $380,000, with the largest portion provided by private gifts, Caswell said.
