U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, reads from “The Circus Ship” to Anne Dalphin’s fourth-graders at the Presumpscot School in Portland on Monday. Pingree, co-sponsor of a resolution making this week National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, said she wants to raise awareness about the need for greater adult literacy in Maine. According to the National Adult Literacy Survey, 42 percent of Maine adults read below the level needed to get a job that can support a family.
