State police on Friday returned to the area where a Windham man’s body was found Tuesday night, trying to answer questions about his death.

David Harmon, 40, was last seen by his wife when she dropped him off at 5:15 a.m. Tuesday at the corner of Land of Nod Road and Cole Road. His body was found at the base of an 8-foot ledge just north of there.

Police initially would not characterize the death, but after an autopsy by the state medical examiner, they termed it suspicious.

“Suspicious and unexplained, and we’re trying to explain it,” said Lt. Brian McDonough, head of detectives for the Maine State Police in southern Maine.

“We’re making progress. Hopefully we’ll figure out what happened in the next day or two,” he said.

Detectives are continuing to search for clues where Harmon’s body was found, in woods across Route 302 from Percy Hawkes Road, and are interviewing witnesses.

Harmon is survived by his wife, Melissa, and his teenage son, Austin. His obituary says he was known for his quick wit and sarcasm.

Harmon grew up in Windham and was a self-employed painter. He enjoyed hunting and liked visiting the family camp in Byron, the obituary said.
