SOUTH BERWICK — It may have been touch and go for a while, but nothing that a couple of clock munching marches couldn’t fix.
Biddeford put together just that type of scoring drive, twice in the second half, and walked away with a healthy 30-12 Western Class A football season opening win over Marshwood, Friday.
Ryan Webb and Andrew Descoteaux each capped long drives with Tiger TDs, breaking open a game that for a while, at least, was too close for comfort.
“I don’t think we really played that well,” said Tigers’ senior quarterback Tyler Audie. “But when we needed guys to step up in certain situations, they did.”
Such was the case with 4:04 left in the fourth quarter, when Biddeford clung uneasily to a 20-6 lead.
Marshwood had driven to the Biddeford 13, and was threatening to score, when Tiger defender Jordan Hevey stripped Hawks quarterback Troy Pappas then dove on the loose ball.
“I just tackled him and ripped the ball out,” Hevey said. “I just saw it come out, and I jumped on it.”
That led to the last Tigers’ score, a 1-yard plunge by Descoteaux.
“That was big,” said Audie. “He came up with a big play. That gave us a spark. It got the defense off the field really quick. The offense went on and we executed.”
In all, turnovers set up three of Biddeford’s four scores.
Capitalizing on a pair of Marshwood mistakes, the Tigers jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead.
The first of those came after a muffed snap on a Hawks’ punt attempt gave Biddeford the ball on the Marshwood 20.
Three plays later, Audie scored on a 6-yard keeper.
The 2-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score, 6-0.
Fortune quickly smiled on the Tigers again, when Pappas fumbled the ball on the Hawks’ 31.
Audie took the Tigers on an eight play jaunt, capped by Nick Gagne’s 1-yard plunge.
“They (the Hawks) are big and physical,” said Biddeford coach Scott Descoteaux. “We fought for every inch we had.”
Biddeford seemed ready to put the Hawks away early after taking the ball deep into Marshwood territory on its next two possessions.
However, both drives stalled, which enabled Marshwood to pull back to within 14-6 just before halftime with a 68-yard, 14-play drive capped by a 3-yard toss from Pappas to Reggie Muchemore.
Strong defense by Biddeford kept the Hawks from taking any momentum into the second half, which gave the offense time to hit stride.
“We’ll take it,” said Audie. “A win’s a win. But we’ve got some stuff to work on for next week (against Massabesic).”
