As summer winds down teachers are back in the classroom preparing for the start of another school year. Regional school units 21 and 23 will start their second school year following consolidation, while elementary students in Buxton will head to a brand new building later this month.

York County Sheriff Maurice Ouellette reminds drivers to be aware of their surroundings as school gets back in session as children will be on the sides of roads waiting for school buses. The sheriff’s office will have added patrol cruisers on duty when schools open. For a full scheduled of those openings, read on:

BIDDEFORD

Classes for Biddeford students in grades one through 12 begin Tuesday, Sept. 7.

Children in kindergarten start their first day of school on Friday, Sept. 10. Screening for children entering kindergarten will take place Sept. 7 through 9. Screenings will be conducted by appointment only.

RSU 21

Incoming freshmen will begin classes at Kennebunk High School on Monday, Aug. 30. Sophomores, juniors and seniors will all start a day later on Tuesday, Aug. 31. All KHS students will be off on Friday, Sept. 3 and Monday, Sept. 6 to commemorate the Labor Day holiday. School begins at 7:45 a.m.

At Middle School of the Kennebunks, all students will begin school on Monday, Aug. 30 at 7:30 a.m.

Sea Road School in Kennebunk will begin classes on Monday, Aug. 30 at 8:10 a.m.

Mildred L. Day School in Arundel will also start on Monday, Aug. 30 at 8:30 a.m.

Students in grades one through five at Kennebunkport Consolidated School will start on Monday, Aug. 30, while all other students will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 1. The school day begins at 8:10 a.m.

At Kennebunk Elementary School, students in grades one through three will begin school on Monday, Aug. 30. Kindergarten students will start school on Wednesday, Sept. 1. All students will begin school at 8:15 a.m.

RSU 23

Freshman orientation for Thornton Academy High School students will be held on Sept. 1. All other high school students begin school on Sept. 2. Thornton Academy Middle School students begin Sept. 1. The school day at Thornton Academy begins at 7:45 a.m.

Freshman orientation for Old Orchard Beach High School will be held on Aug. 31. All other students begin school on Sept. 1. School begins at 7:30 a.m.

At Loranger Middle School in Old Orchard Beach, school begins at 8 a.m. on Aug. 31. At Saco Middle School, school begins at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 31, and at C.K. Burns in Saco, school begins on Aug. 31 at 8:30 a.m.

For elementary school students at Dayton Consolidated School, classes begin at 8:35 a.m. on Aug. 31; at John Fairfield Elementary School and Young School, classes for first and second graders begin at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 31; classes for kindergartners for these two schools begin at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 8.; and at Jameson Elementary School in Old Orchard Beach, classes for first and second graders begins on Aug. 31 at 8:30 a.m. Classes for kindergartners begin on Sept. 8.

RSU 57

For students who attend classes in Regional School Unit  57, school starts Tuesday, Aug. 31. There are no classes on Friday, Sept. 3 or on Monday, Sept. 6, in observance of Labor Day.

RSU 57 includes the towns of Alfred, Limerick, Lyman, Shapleigh, Newfield and Waterboro.

SANFORD

Students attending Sanford’s four elementary schools ”“ Carl J. Lamb, Emerson School, Lafayette School and Margaret Chase Smith School ”“ can get a sneak peek at their schools from 2-3 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 31. Classes for students in first grade and beyond begin Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 8:20 a.m. and conclude at 3 p.m.

Students attending kindergarten at Carl J. Lamb School and Margaret Chase Smith School start Sept. 2, and they too, begin at 8:20 a.m. and conclude the school day at 3 p.m.

Willard School, which instructs youngsters in grades four through six opens Sept. 1, with classes starting at 7:40 a.m. and ending at 2 p.m.

At Sanford Junior High School, Sept. 1 will be the first day of school for grade seven only. Grade eight students start Sept. 2, and classes begin at 7:40 a.m. and conclude at 2 p.m.

At Sanford High School, the first day of school depends on the student’s grade and where the first letter of their last name falls in the alphabet: On Sept. 1, freshmen attend from 7:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.; while seniors whose last names start with “A” to “L” attend from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., while seniors whose names begin with “M” to “Z” will attend from noon to 2 p.m. On Sept. 2, juniors will attend classes from 7:45 a.m. to noon, while sophomores will attend from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Sept. 7, all Sanford High School students begin classes at 7:50 a.m. and end at 2 p.m.

At Sanford Regional Vocational Center, all non-Sanford vocational students will attend classes. Sanford students will follow Sanford High School’s schedule. Classes commence at 7:50 a.m. and end at 1:20 p.m.

Academic classes begin Sept. 8 at Sanford Community and Adult Education.

There will be no classes for any students on Friday, Sept. 3 or on Labor Day, Sept. 6.

WOCSD

Superintendent Elaine M. Tomaszewski said the start of the school year will include finalizing work on the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District’s long-range plan, welcoming the first director of instructional improvement, whose responsibilities will include curriculum, instruction, assessment and professional development, and continuing to leverage technology to support and increase teaching and learning, according to a statement.

Classes for the 2010-11 school year will commence on Aug. 31, with two exceptions: At Wells High School, freshmen are expected on Aug. 31 for orientation; sophomores, juniors and seniors will begin classes on Sept. 1. Kindergarten students will begin classes Sept. 7 to allow for kindergarten screening and individual appointments.

Schools days at Wells Elementary School are from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.;  Wells Junior High School from 7:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m.; Wells High School from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
