SCARBOROUGH – Football season has already begun as local teams have started preseason games and scrimmages, and the rest of the sports aren’t all that far behind.
The South Portland boys soccer team was scheduled to travel to Freeport on Tuesday afternoon (after The Current’s deadline) and will return South Portland for its first preseason scrimmage in front of the home crowd as the Red Riots will face off against Gray-New Gloucester at Wainright Field at 4:30 p.m. The Riots will get the boys soccer season under way on Sept. 4 as they travel to Westbrook to tangle with the Blue Blazes in an 11 a.m. game.
The Riots’ girls soccer team will be in action on Aug. 26 as they make the trip up I-295 to take on Freeport in the shadow of L.L.Bean at 10 a.m. The Riot girls will return home on Aug. 31 to face Greely in a preseason game at 2:30 p.m.
In Scarborough, all eyes will be on the football team as they will be hosting the Portland Bulldogs in a preseason game that marks the first Friday night under the lights in 2010. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
The Storm golf team will also be in action next week, getting a jump on the season as they take on Deering at Riverside Golf Course at 3:30 p.m.
The Storm will also have two teams looking to defend state championships this fall. The field hockey team, which was in action at the Portland Play Day on Aug. 25, will open up the 2010 season on the road with a game against Thornton Academy at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 10.
The Scarborough boys soccer team, which hasn’t lost a game the past two seasons, also captured their second straight Gold Ball in 2009 and will be going for the three-peat in 2010. The boys soccer team opens up the 2010 season on Sept. 4 against Massabesic at 3 p.m.
