AARP safe-driver class
An AARP Driver Safety Class for drivers age 50 and older will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at the AARP Maine State Office, 1685 Congress St.
Fee is $12 for AARP members and $14 for others. Register by Friday by calling John Hammon at 655-4943. Other workshops at the same location will be held Sept. 3 and Oct. 7.
Tour of Fort Scammel
Maine Maritime Museum will conduct a guided walking tour of the early 19th-century Fort Scammel, one of Portland’s oldest harbor defense forts, and House Island.

Living with loss session
The Cancer Community Center is offering a group meeting “Living With Loss” from 6 to 7:30 tonight.
The group meets the first and third Wednesday of every month. It is geared toward those who have experienced the loss of a loved one to cancer, whether it was recent or years ago.

Fair for Historical Society
The Historical Society is holding its annual fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, rain or shine. The event will be held at the Scarborough Historical Museum, next to Engine 6 Fire Station on Route 1. Flea market items, baked goods, clothes and books will be on sale during the fair.

Preservation with herbs
Using herbs from the Shaker Village gardens, participants in Saturday’s workshop will make a variety of recipes for the canning and preserving season.
The workshop is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the village on Route 26. Preregistration is required and the class is $40.
Also on Saturday, there will be a workshop on how to make paper from yarn from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The fee is $25.

The first annual New Gloucester Historical Society Yard Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the Town Hall parking lot, 385 Intervale Road. Featured items include antiques, cameras, furniture, pet items, household items, holiday materials, yard, garden, vinyl records, sheet music and much more.
