WESTBROOK – The Westbrook Little League 10-11 year-old all-stars punched their ticket for the state tournament with a 2-1 win over Cape Elizabeth Friday night.
The win, which was Westbrook’s second over Cape in the tournament, gave Westbrook the Little League District 6 title and sent them to the state tournament in Bucksport, where they will be taking on Old Town on July 30 at 3 p.m.
In the District 6 tournament’s first game on Monday, Westbrook got off to a fast start and went on to a 5-0 win in a game that would eventually span two days.
In the first inning, Westbrook blasted the Cape pitching for six straight hits and plated five runs before recording their first out of the game.
Westbrook starting pitcher Alex Jacobs led off the inning with a double and came around to score on Dylan Francoeur’s RBI single to right. Logan McCarthy followed by blasting a two-run homer to left center field to make it 3-0. David Redmond kept the Westbrook hitting streak alive with a double and he scored on a Conner Blake RBI single.
Blake eventually moved over to third on two passed balls and he scored when Derek Higgins lined a solid single to right.
After that offensive outburst, both pitchers settled down and began to control the game until lightning forced the game to be halted in the top of the fourth. After an hour, officials decided to suspend the game and come back to finish things the next day.
The delay didn’t hurt Westbrook as Bailey Ryan replaced Jacobs and kept Cape off the board. The two Westbrook hurlers only surrendered one hit each and combined for 12 strikeouts in the game.
After Cape beat Falmouth, Westbrook took the field for a rematch on Friday, this time with the District 6 title on the line.
Jacobs got the start and he came up huge, tossing a no-hitter to seal the win for Westbrook. Jacobs allowed just three walks in the game and struck out 13 as Cape scored their only run off a walk and an error.
Jacobs come out firing, striking out the side in the top of the first. The Westbrook offense got going in the bottom of the first as Francoeur reached second base on a throwing error by Cape’s pitcher with one out. On the next pitch, McCarthy took a ball to the helmet, fortunately he wasn’t injured and he took his base, but was replaced by Andrew Brown.
Redmond got Westbrook on the board with an RBI double that scored Francoeur to give Westbrook a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when Westbrook struck again. With runners on first and second, Matt Berry bunted, and the pitcher whirled to try and get the lead runner at third. Unfortunately for Cape, no one was covering third and Matt Kelley scored easily to make it 2-0.
Cape got their lone run of the game in the fifth, but that was as close as they would come as Westbrook slammed the door the rest of the way and captured the district title.
