Pirates’ schedule for upcoming season filled with Eastern Conference opponents

The Portland Pirates will play their entire 80-game schedule during the 2010-11 season against teams in the Eastern Conference.

The Pirates announced their AHL opponents Wednesday. They will play 64 games against their six Atlantic Division rivals: 12 games each against Manchester, Providence and Worcester; 10 each against Springfield and Bridgeport; and eight against Hartford.

NHL: Minnesota re-signed backup goalie Josh Harding to a one-year contract.

• Forward Brian Willsie signed a free-agent contract with the Washington Capitals.

BOXING

U.S. CHAMPIONSHPS: Middleweight Russell Lamour Jr. of Portland lost a 10-6 decision to Daquan Arnett of Orlando, Fla., in the quarterfinals at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Lamour won a 12-10 decision over Rashad Brown of Lansdowne, Pa., in a first-round bout.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Sue Bird’s 3-pointer with 6.4 seconds left in the third overtime lifted the Seattle Storm to a 111-107 victory against the Mercury at Phoenix.

• Sandrine Gruda scored 21 points to lead Connecticut to a 77-68 victory over Indiana at Indianapolis.

• Sylvia Fowles, Jia Perkins and Epiphanny Prince each scored 14 points as Chicago beat San Antonio 88-61 at Rosemont, Ill.

• Nicky Anosike had 16 points and assisted Rebekkah Brunson for the go-ahead layup with 7.2 seconds left to lift Minnesota to an 83-81 win over visiting Atlanta.

GOLF

U.S. AMATEUR PUBLIC LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP: Ricky Jones of Thomaston lost in the first round of match play at Greensboro, N.C. Andrew Yun of Chandler, Ariz., defeated Jones 6 and 5 after Jones qualified with a two-round total of 5-over-par 147 during medal play.

TENNIS

SWEDISH OPEN: Top-seeded Robin Soderling of Sweden defeated compatriot Andreas Vinciguerra 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-2 in the second round at Bastad, Sweden.

SOCCER

WORLD RANKINGS: Spain regained the top spot in the FIFA rankings after winning its first World Cup title, and the United States moved up one place to 13th.

Spain took over No. 1 from five-time champion Brazil, which had displaced the Spaniards in April.

FOOTBALL

NFL: Cleveland nose tackle Shaun Rogers reached an agreement that could dismiss charges he tried to carry a gun through airport security in April. The case will be dismissed if he completes a diversion program that includes volunteer service and 10 hours in a gun class.

• Tennessee agreed to terms on a contract with free-agent tight end Sean Ryan.
