WELLS ”“ The words were Grace Martin’s.

But they could ”“ and probably had been ”“ uttered by Babe Ruth, or Dustin Pedroia, or anyone else who has participated in a struggle and come away victorious.

“I love winning,” she said, moments after helping her mates on the Biddeford All-Stars capture their second straight District 4 9/10 Little League Softball championship. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Martin socked an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth that scored Chantal Gagnon from first base, and gave Biddeford a 9-8 win over Saco, in the district title game at the Tilcon Fields.

Biddeford will now head to Waldoboro for the State Tournament, which begins July 21.

“That’s really exciting,” said the nine-year-old daughter of team manager Steve Martin. “I think we’re going to win.”

Martin pitched into the fifth inning, holding Saco hitless for the first four. She helped her own cause with a two-run double in the fourth that put Biddeford ahead 7-2.

However Saco rebounded with six runs in the top of the fifth ”“ two of them driven in by Kaya O’Connor ”“ which allowed it to take an 8-7 lead.

Biddeford knotted the score again, 8-8, in the bottom of the fifth, which set the stage for a wild finish in the bottom of the sixth.

Gagnon walked to open the frame, then promptly galloped home when Martin lashed the first pitch into center field.

“I was really happy,” said Martin. “We were really excited.”

No doubt, the Babe would have been, too.
