LYMAN — Leave it to the Kennbunk Little League All-Star team to have a flair for the dramatic.
Having won two of its three games by one run during the Maine District 4 Little League playoffs, Kennebunk pulled off its third one-run win, this time in extra innings, over East Biddeford, winning 2-1 Tuesday night at Bernier Field in Lyman.
With the win, Kennebunk (4-1) will play in the District 4 Championship Game, which will be played Wednesday night in Lebanon.
The winning run was scored in the bottom of the seventh inning. With Ryan Coughlan on first base, Isaac Allaire-McDonald hit a ground ball that bounced into short right field for a base hit. Coughlan made his way to third, but the throw into the base bounced away from the third baseman, giving Coughlan the chance to score. Running for dear life, Coughlan slid into home plate, where he was mobbed by teammates.
“We’ve been lucky, winning the coin toss to get [home field advantage],” Kennebunk pitcher Colby LaPointe said. “We’ve come through each time, three times, by chance.”
Kennebunk trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Chris Coughlan reached first on a base hit to start the inning, and reached second base on a passed ball. LaPointe moved Coughlan over on a fielder’s choice, before Jensen LaPoint hit a deep fly ball to left field, giving Coughlan enough time to tag at third and score on the sacrifice fly, tying the game 1-1.
Biddeford scored its lone run in the first inning, when Bailey Fontaine smacked a pitch off LaPointe into a car parked beyond the left field wall for a solo home run and a 1-0 lead.
It would be the only mistake LaPointe would have in his six innings on the mound. LaPointe struck out 11 batters while giving up two hits. Chris Coughlan picked up the win, pitching just over an inning of relief.
“I kept my composure and I kept pitching well, so I felt good about it,” LaPointe said.
The ensuing five innings after Fontaine’s home run was a pitcher’s duel between LaPointe and East Biddeford righty Kevin Descoteaux, coming fresh off a no-hitter in his previous start against Shaker Valley on July 7. Descoteaux was just as impressive, striking out 10 batters. East Biddeford, who picked up wins over Alfred-Lyman, Dayton, York, Shaker Valley and West Biddeford, finishes its playoff run with a record of 5-2.
Kennebunk will have a chance to gain revenge on South Berwick, who defeated Kennebunk 8-0 on July 8. South Berwick has yet to lose a game in the tournament, going a perfect 4-0.
LaPointe said the win over East Biddeford has been Kennebunk’s best game.
“We’re going to the district championship, so this is our biggest win yet,” LaPointe said.
