BIDDEFORD — He stepped on the mound with a full count, staring down the hitter. East Biddeford pitcher Kevin Descoteaux had faced 20 hitters, and with the exception of two walks and an error, sent 17 of those runners back into their own dugout. He reared back and fired his fastball, whizzing past the hitter for strike three. Descoteaux smacked his glove in approval and calmly walked toward his dugout, but not before being mobbed by his teammates.
Descoteaux had just finished pitching a no-hitter, leading East Biddeford to a 6-1 victory over Shaker Valley in the Maine District 4 Little League All-Star playoffs on Wednesday.
Descoteaux struck out 14 batters en route to the win, while walking two batters.
“It feels pretty good,” Descoteaux said about the no-hitter. “I was just trying to get ahead in the count, and strike people out.”
East Biddeford scored four runs in the first inning, when Garren Dewitt and Tommy Green scored on RBI singles by Nicholas Conley and Nate Huot to take a quick 2-0 score. Conley and Adam Michel scored two batters later to make the game 4-0 on an error in the outfield off a fly ball hit by Descoteaux.
East Biddeford grabbed another run in the second inning, as Dewitt was plated on an RBI groundout from Bailey Fontaine. East Biddeford scored its final run in the fourth inning, when Dewitt smacked and RBI single, plating Eric St. Amand.
Dewitt finished as the top hitter for East Biddeford, going 2 for 2, including a double, while knocking in an RBI and scoring two runs.
Descoteaux said the runs helped his confidence on the mound.
“It made me feel pretty good,” Descoteaux said.
Shaker Valley scored its lone run in the fifth inning, when Derek Coulombe scored on an RBI groundout by Collin Morris. Coulombe reached first on an error, which kept Descoteaux’s no-hitter alive, then reached second on a wild pitch and stole third before scoring on the Morris groundout.
Though Shaker Valley had trouble offensively, the team flashed some leather in the field, including a double play turned by pitcher Blake Estabrook in the third inning off a line drive by Descoteaux.
With the win, East Biddeford (3-1) moves on in the playoffs, and will York on Friday at Smith Field in York.
Shaker Valley (2-2), which collected wins over Wells and Mousam Valley, is knocked out of the tournament. — Contact Dave Dyer at 282-1535 ext. 318.
