BIDDEFORD — It was double the fun Thursday afternoon at St. Louis field, as Biddeford Savings and Massabesic played against each other not once, but twice.
Massabesic won the first contest 7-5, before Biddeford Savings got the bats rolling and won the second game 13-7.
Massabesic (2-5), which won four games near the end of the high school regular season, showed flashes of its potential in game one. Hunter Duncan led Massabesic in the contest with two hits, and scored three runs.
Biddeford Savings (5-2) turned things around in game two, however, scoring five runs in the first inning alone. After opening the inning with three straight walks, Taylor Reuillard smacked a two-run single to left field for a quick 2-0 lead. Five batters later, after Tyler Audie scored on an error, outfielder Bob Cote whacked a two-run single, plating Reuillard and Tyler Laverriere to bring the score to 5-0.
Biddeford Savings scored three more runs in the second, taking an 8-0 lead, three more runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth. Cote and Reuillard led the squad in hitting with two hits and three RBIs a piece.
Strong run support helped Biddeford Savings starter Nate McKeown, who labored but got himself out of tight jams throughout his four innings on the mound, finishing with four strikeouts.
“I hadn’t pitched well in the last couple of games, and the run support gave me confidence to go out there and just throw strikes,” McKeown said.
While trailing throughout the contest, Massabesic showed fight at the end, avoiding the possible ending of the game by 10-run rule. Trailing 11-1 in the fifth, catcher Cody Frazier knocked an RBI single to center field and Mike Guay followed with a two-run single to bring the game to 11-4. Massabesic scored four more runs in the seventh inning, thanks to an RBI single by Travis Mansfield, and a two-run single by Eddie Warren to make the score 13-7.
McKeown said he was impressed with Massabesic’s performance.
“In game one, they just smacked the ball around,” McKeown said. “In game two it took them a while to get to me, but they did.”
Biddeford Savings hosts Bonanza of Sanford for a double-header on Saturday, while Massabesic hosts Noble in a double-header, also scheduled for Saturday.
McKeown said he has confidence that the younger players playing for Biddeford Savings will help keep the success of the high school program next season.
“We’ve got a good class coming up, and hopefully we can keep things going and repeat next year,” McKeown said.
