Mainers rally to tie Lowell in eighth inning, then score on a wild pitch in 13th to win it

Jim Schult scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the 13th inning to give the Sanford Mainers a 3-2 victory over the Lowell All-Americans in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Goodall Park in Sanford.

Sanford (13-8) tied Lowell (5-14) with two runs in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single by Matt Marra.

TWILIGHT LEAGUE: Lenders Network scored three runs in the third inning and held on for a 3-2 win over Maine-ly Mobile Home Financing at Deering Oaks.

John Dalton and Mick Distasio each singled in a run, and John Carey added a sacrifice fly.

AMERICAN LEGION: Zach Gardiner had three hits and visiting Stockhouse Restaurant hit three home runs in a 19-4 victory over OA-Yarmouth.

Jake Gardiner hit a three-run homer in the second inning, Tom Lemay added a two-run shot in the fifth and Kyle Heath added a solo homer during a seven-run sixth.

Dean Darien had a home run and double for OA-Yarmouth.

JUNIOR LEGION: Will Leblond pitched a five-hitter and Seth Dobieski had two hits as visiting Cape Elizabeth (5-1) downed Freeport, 7-1.

Nick Cartmell had two hits for Freeport.

SOFTBALL

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Jennie Finch hit a grand slam as the United States remained unbeaten with a 16-1 victory against Canada at Caracas, Venezuela.

The U.S. and Japan, which beat Venezuela 2-0 earlier in the day, are 8-0 heading into their matchup today in the double-elimination playoff phase of the tournament.

HOCKEY

NHL: Right wing David Clarkson signed a three-year, $8 million contract with the New Jersey Devils two days after the team gave him a qualifying offer that prevented him from becoming an unrestricted free agent.

New Jersey also placed forwards Jay Pandolfo and Andrew Peters on waivers.

• The Anaheim Ducks acquired forward Jason Jaffray from the Calgary Flames for left wing Logan MacMillan.

The Ducks also bought out the contract of defenseman Nathan Oystrick, who will get about $366,000.

• Philadelphia signed goalie Michael Leighton to a two-year deal for $3.1 million, an NHL source said.

• Dallas signed forward Krys Barch to a two-year, $1.675 million contract extension and wing Francis Wathier to a two-year extension for an undisclosed amount.

• The Detroit Red Wings and Mayor Dave Bing agreed to extend discussions on a new lease deal that will keep the team at Joe Louis Arena.

The team has been contemplating whether to build a new arena or move at least temporarily to The Palace of Auburn Hills, the home of the NBA’s Detroit Pistons.

• Rod Brind’Amour is retiring after 21 seasons to take a front-office job with the Carolina Hurricanes.

• Edmonton traded forward Patrick O’Sullivan to Phoenix for defenseman Jim Vandermeer.

• Columbus claimed former Edmonton left wing Ethan Moreau off waivers. Moreau, who has a year left on a contract that pays him $1.75 million, had nine goals and nine assists last season.

• Chicago acquired forwards Viktor Stalberg, Philippe Paradis and Christopher DiDomenico from Toronto for right wing Kris Versteeg and left wing Bill Sweatt.
