Community news

It has been such a busy time these past few weeks. On Monday night when I went to the Food Pantry, there was quite a line and Madeline Roberts, who is in charge, told me there were 79 families that night! I don’t think the economy improvement has reached all corners of Windham just yet. There is much to do to fill any spare moments – and much of it is free. Visit the library, borrow a movie, a book, or just relax in the air conditioning and read the daily paper or make use of the computers. Stop in on a Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Windham Historical Society on Windham Center Road (near the town hall) and peruse the displays, look at your old yearbook or check on something in a town report. While you’re at the library, pick up a list of activities for adults and children this summer. And let’s all pitch in and help a neighbor in need! Make it the community we all want it to be!

Music on the Hill

The Windham Hill United Church of Christ presents its 13th year of concerts for the public beginning July 10 with our own Rick Charette. The concert starts at 5 p.m. On July 17, an a cappella group, Sidecar Heroes, performs at 7 p.m. Denny Breau Trio brings their folk music to the hill on July 24 at 7 p.m. The final concert is The Royal River Philharmonic Jazz Band on July 31 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the door, $12 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and age 12 and under; $40 for the series. For Rick Charette’s concert, tickets for 12 and under are $3. For reservations, call 893-1688. The concerts all take place at the church on the hill, 140 Windham Center Road.

New Veteran’s Advocate

Wednesday, July 14, from 9 a.m. noon, Phyllis D’Orsay, a seasoned Veteran’s Advocate from Portland, will be available to assist veterans and dependents with questions about benefits and other information at Windham Veterans Center. She will be on hand on the second and fourth Wednesdays each month. If you have questions of a military nature, stop in and get some answers. The Veterans Center is off Route 302 in back of the Windham Mall.

Food Pantry plea

The Food Pantry would appreciate any foods including perishables such as 99-cent pizzas, Hot Pockets, or any food a young teen or the 10-12 age group could fix for themselves this summer when they are home. The pantry has the freezer space available for these products. The pantry could also use donations of breakfast items like Pop Tarts, frozen breakfast combos and cereal. If you would like to donate any of these articles, you may drop them off any day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Caregiver support

On the first Wednesday each month, a Family Caregiver Support and Discussion Group meets from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Windham Hill United Church of Christ. This is a good place for family and friends who are helping an older adult relative or friend. Learn about resources available and get useful ideas from others who are just like you. This is directed by Kate Dulac, Southern Maine Agency on Aging, 1-800-427-7411, ext. 558. Call her for more information.

Crafts, yard sale,

farmers market

There will be a Christmas In July Cr aft Show at the Little Meeting House, 721 Roosevelt Trail, North Windham, on Saturday, July 10, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tables are available for rent for $20 and a homemade pie – or a space (no table) for $15 and a homemade pie. The pies will be sold by the Little Meeting House trustees to raise funds for ongoing expenses and renovations. Call Joan at 615-7315 or 591-5493 to reserve your spot. The Windham Farmers Market is held behind the Little Meeting House and the North Windham Union Church will be having a Yard Sale next door at the same time as the Craft Show. Sounds like a one-stop shopping experience!
