KENNEBUNKPORT — Garnet Hathaway has this Saturday all planned out.

He’ll be hanging around his home in Kennebunkport, albeit somewhat anxiously.

He’ll be glued to the Internet coverage of the seven-round 2010 NHL Entry Draft in Los Angeles, as clubs put dibs on promising young hockey players from around the globe.

And he’ll be keeping his phone at the ready, just in case one of those clubs calls his name.

It’s a strong possibility, and Hathaway,  a big bodied right wing who just finished up a four-year stay at Phillips Andover Academy, admits to having a few butterflies.

“I’m excited,” he said. “Anything could happen, so we’ll just see. I can only hope someone will call.”

Hathaway was ranked No. 110 among North American skaters by the NHL’s Central Scouting Bureau when it released its final player evaluations in April.

That was an improvement of 63 positions over his mid-season ranking by the Bureau, and projects to a possible selection as early as the third round.

“Only one team has to like me for something to happen,” said Hathaway.

At least one team does.

“He’s got great size (6-2, 180) and is strong on his skates,” said one veteran NHL amateur scout. “If a team is looking for a power forward, they will want to take a look at him.”

Hathaway, who will play for Brown University this fall, has spent most of the off-season in dry land training, working on his strength and conditioning with famed fitness guru Mike Boyle.

“I thought it would be better to stay off the ice for a little bit,” he said. “Work in the weight room. Get that aspect worked up.”

Hathaway isn’t the only local player whose name might be called this weekend.

Goaltender Brian Billett of Kennebunk has been on the NHL radar for the past two seasons while playing for the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs.

Billett was ranked by Central Scouting 25th among North American goaltenders in its mid-term ratings.

However, an ankle injury kept him out of action for more than a month, which cost him a spot on the final rankings.

Once he was healthy again, Billett led the Monarchs to their fifth straight EJHL championship, while racking up some very impressive numbers (1.92 gaa, .943 sv. Pct.).

Billett will play one more season for the Monarchs before enrolling at Boston College for the 2011-12 season, where he will be a teammate of Biddeford’s Brian Dumoulin.

Another potential draftee of local note is defenseman Jake Rutt of Scarborough.

Rutt, a Monarchs teammate of Billett’s, was ranked No. 148 by Central Scouting.

He is committed to UMaine beginning in 2011.

Round One of the NHL Draft will be tonight, with the Boston Bruins expected to use the second overall pick to take dynamic center Tyler Seguin (Plymouth OHL).

The Buffalo Sabres, parent club of the Portland Pirates, have the 23rd pick in the first round, and are expected to look for help at forward.

Two years ago, the Sabres grabbed dynamic winger Tyler Ennis, this season’s AHL Rookie of the Year with Portland, in the 26th spot.
