WINDHAM – The fourth annual Windham Summerfest had warm weather, plenty of people and fun, and went off without a hitch.

“It was just a great day,” said Windham Parks and Recreation Director Brian Ross. “I am very pleased with how the day turned out. I think it is the best day we have had since the start of Summerfest.”

With the temperature hitting the 80-degree mark, vendors were running low on water, juice, and soda, but the Boy Scout booth hosting the dunk tank had no shortage of customers.

“The dunk tank was pretty popular,” said Ross. “The weather certainly helped them out.”

Also helping people out on Saturday was Ron’s Mexican Cantina, founded in 2007 to kick off the return of Summerfest and raise funds for donation to Camp Sunshine in Casco, a nonprofit organization supporting children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The Cantina, as it has the past few years, sold out of food by day’s end.

“This year we raised $3,500 for Camp Sunshine,” said the owner of the Cantina, Ron Eby, also a key Summerfest organizer. “People set a great example by waiting in line and donating money to this cause.”

One particular gift was extraordinary.

“We have a contributor that has paid $500 the past three years for a taco,” said Eby. “This year he paid $800. He always comes through for Camp Sunshine, no matter what the economy is like. He really makes a difference. He doesn’t expect anything in return. It is just heartwarming.”

Summerfest, which is held at Windham High School, consists of a parade, day-long festivities, community booths, games and activities for kids, music, food and fireworks.

Planning for next year’s event starts almost immediately after the day is over.

“We have already started talking about next year,” said Eby. “We’ll go a couple of months without jumping in too deep, but we plan pretty close to 364 days a year for this one event.”

Eby noted that volunteers, local businesses and the community are all integral parts of Summerfest.

“I am always amazed at the outpouring of support and participation in the event from the community,” said Eby. “It is pretty cool. It makes it all worth it.”
