SANFORD — It wasn’t pretty, but a win is a win.

The Sanford Mainers overcame four errors to hang on for a 3-2 win over the Lowell All-Americans in front of a crowd of 441 fans at Goodall Park on Monday. The Mainers (2-1) are owners of a two-game winning streak in the first three games of the season, with both wins coming at Goodall.

While the Mainers have committed 10 errors in the first three games of the season, manager Aaron Izaryk said he is not overly concerned, as most of his starting infield has yet to arrive, as they continue their college seasons in the NCAA playoffs.

“That’s part of a long season,” Izaryk said. “You’re going to have nights like that. Just because you didn’t play well, you can’t just say, ”˜Oh, we’re not going to win today.’ You’ve got to find a way to win when you don’t play your best baseball.”

Sanford’s toughest defensive inning came in the top of the fourth. Owning a 3-1 lead, the Mainers made two errors in the inning to load the bases with two outs. Third baseman Matt Marra threw the ball away on a groundball hit by Lowell second baseman Alan Pastyrnak, which scored two runs. However, because rightfielder Matt Jacobs bumped into Marra on the groundball, Jacobs was called out for interference, ending the possible scoring rally, much to the dismay of Lowell manager Jeff Kane, who quickly protested, to no avail.

The Mainers showcased strong pitching to fight through the adversity. Starter Mike Augliera logged five innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out four batters. Augliera showed good movement on both his fastball and slider throughout the evening.

“I felt very confident in my pitches tonight,” Augliera said. “My fastball was good, my slider was working pretty well outside. It was just one of those days where I was feeling good.”

Augliera was relieved by Eric Ruth, who struck out three batters in two innings of work. Tom McDermott pitched a scoreless eighth and Lucas Ellex picked up the first Sanford save of the season in the ninth.

Offensively, the Mainers showed some power on Monday night. Mainers outfielder Jim Schult blasted a John Sheehan fastball over the 370 ft. sign in left field for a solo home run to give Sanford a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. No home run was hit over the left field wall of oddly-dimensioned ballpark (340 ft. in left field, 295 ft. in right) at any time last season.

“It’s a freaking mile to leftfield,” Schult said. “I was just running hard I wasn’t watching the ball. That’s cool [about hitting it out of left field] because I hit one into the corner last year [as a member of the North Shore Navigators], and a guy was camped out under it, that’s why I didn’t think it was going out.”

Izaryk said it will be difficult to figure out Schult’s role on the Mainers, as he can both hit and pitch. Schult, who hails from Eastern Connecticut State University, went 5-1 with a 3.52 E.R.A. in 10 starts this spring, but also led the Warriors with a .377 batting average, while smacking six home runs with 45 RBIs. Schult has also had a hit in all three of the Mainers games so far this season.

“I’ll be honest, I’m going to have a big problem with Schult, because I brought him in as a pitcher, because I think he’s an outstanding pitcher,” Izaryk said. “It’s tough to take a hot bat out of the lineup. But Jimmy and I have talked, and we’re going to get at-bats for him when we can get him, and if he hits he’ll be in the lineup. We’re going to put the best nine hitters out there. It will all play itself out.”

The Mainers added two more runs in the botttom of the third, when Mike McCann plated Marra on an RBI single. McCann would score moments later when Schult reached base on an error by Lowell shortstop Tim Rines.

Lowell scored its first run in the third, thanks to an RBI single by Matt Miller, and added one more on an RBI double by Matt Gedman (son of former Boston Red Sox catcher Rich Gedman) in the fifth inning.

Sanford hosts the Laconia Muskrats on Wednesday, with the game time set for 6:30 p.m.

Short Hops”¦

Sanford first baseman Greg Miller left the game in the third inning with a possible groin strain after making a stretch on an errant throw, but was able to walk off the field under his own power. Izaryk said Miller will be listed as day-to-day”¦Augliera, Ellex and Miller are three of six players who recently showed up in town fresh off the college season. Joining them are pitchers Shane Davis, Alex Caravella and Mainers veteran Colin Snow.
