Bruins enforcer Thornton signs two-year extension

The Boston Bruins signed forward Shawn Thornton to a two-year contract extension, the team said Friday.

The team did not release financial terms.

Thornton, 32, had a goal, nine assists and a career-high 141 penalty minutes in 74 games in 2009-10, his third season with the Bruins. He could have become a free agent on July 1.

Thornton’s 21 fighting majors led the team and tied for fifth in the NHL.

• Ice Edge Holdings has exclusive rights, with some conditions, to negotiate a lease agreement for the Phoenix Coyotes with the city of Glendale, Ariz., under a memorandum of understanding to be presented to the city council next week.

Ice Edge, a group of mostly Canadian investors, would have exclusive negotiating rights for 60 days unless another potential buyer gives $25 million to the city to cover its obligations to the NHL.

SOFTBALL: Danielle Frye hit a two-out, two-run single in the fifth inning to lift Georges Valley (15-0) to a 2-1 win over Telstar (14-1) in the Mountain Valley Conference championship game in Hallowell.

Jill Bradbury pitched a two-hitter, with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Hannah Norjan had both hits and drove in the run for Telstar.

BASEBALL

NECBL: Rob Harding, Dereck Trent and Casey Kalenkosky each hit home runs to lead the Laconia Muskrats to a 6-2 victory over the Sanford Mainers in a season opener at Laconia, N.H.

David Ahern doubled and scored a run for the Mainers, and Tyler DiPrato added an RBI single.
