It’s getting to be old hat for the Scarborough girls track team.

It seems like every year, the Red Storm finish the season on top of the SMAA track heap, and this year is no exception.

On Saturday at Thornton Academy in Saco, the Red Storm defended their SMAA outdoor track title with a solid win at the SMAA championships, finishing well ahead of runner-up Thornton Academy.

With the SMAA title in hand, the Storm will be looking to regain the one prize that eluded them last year, the state track championship, which will be held, which will be held at Cony High School on June 5.

On the boys side, the Gorham Rams came close to winning the conference championship, but were just edged out by Cheverus in the final standings. However, as a consolation, the Rams did take home several individual championships at the meet.

Cheverus won the boys conference championship with 106 points and Gorham finished second with 97. Scarborough finished third with 70 points, Windham was fourth with 63, South Portland finished fifth with 54 points, Westbrook was sixth with 43, Sanford was seventh with 36.5, Thornton was eighth with 33.5, Bonny Eagle was a close ninth with 33 points and Massabesic rounded out the top 10 with 17 points.

For the girls, Scarborough won the championship with 119 points and Thornton was second with 86.3. Cheverus was a close third with 82 points, Biddeford was fourth with 61, Gorham was fifth with 50, Bonny Eagle was sixth with 36, Deering was seventh with 31 points, Massabesic was eighth with 27 and Sanford, Windham and Kennebunk all tied for ninth with 20 points. Westbrook was 15th with 4.33 points.

Gorham’s Jake Willis had an outstanding meet for the Rams. He won the 100-meter dash championship by edging out South Portland’s Adrian Reed 11.54-11.58. Willis also won the 200-meter dash title, this time beating Windham’s Damian Shepard 23.17-23.32. Willis scored the hat trick in individual titles in the long jump. In that event, he managed to outperform the 2010 SMAA male field athlete of the year, Windham’s Patrick Ciez, 20-05 to 20-04.

Willis wasn’t the only Ram to make his way to the top of the winners’ stand. In the pole vault, Gorham’s Mark Walrath won the event, clearing the bar at 13 feet, just 3.25 inches short of the SMAA record in the event.

And Gorham’s Eric Sawyer also took home a conference championship, winning the javelin throw with a top distance of 170 feet.

But it wasn’t just the Gorham boys winning. In the girls 1,600-meter race walk, the Rams took the top two places in the event, with Jennifer Thuotte winning the event in 7:47.96 and her teammate Katie Flanders coming in second in 8:23.04.

Westbrook’s Emmanuel Vincent also won two individual titles at the meet. He took first in the 400-meter dash in 51.72, beating out runner-up Conor Sullivan of Scarborough, who finished in 52.01. Vincent also won the triple jump, outdistancing Ciez, 42-07.75-41.09.5.

Bonny Eagle’s Melissa Carrier won the girls 100-meter dash championship in a close race with Cheverus’ Hannah Lyons. Carrier crossed the line just ahead of Lyons by four-hundredths of a second, 12.90-12.94.
