While they didn’t win the overall team titles, the Cape Elizabeth boys and girls track teams had some strong showings at Saturday’s Western Maine Conference track championships, held at Yarmouth High School.
The Cape girls finished seventh overall with 35 points. York won the girls title with 165.5 points and Greely was the runner-up with 96. On the boys side, the Capers finished ninth overall with 33 points. Falmouth took home the team championship with 124 points and York finished second with 93.
Cape’s Rachel Nichols won the individual championship in the girls 1,600-meter run, finishing in 5:21.11, almost four seconds faster than runner-up Michaela Swiatek of York, who finished in 5:25.01.
Kelsey Barton won the conference championship in the girls 3,200-meter run for the Capers, finishing in 12:05.57, almost seven seconds faster than Shelly Potter of York, who was second in 12:12.05.
The Capers took the top two spots in the boys triple jump, with Ryan Ayers winning the event with a distance of 49-09.25. Cape’s Brenden Shields was second with a distance of 42-4.50.
The Cape boys also won the individual championship in the pole vault, with Jon Bass clearing the bar at 12-6, six inches ahead of runner-up Mike Dejager of Gray-New Gloucester.
