After spending the last two seasons racing on the Pro All-Star Series circuit, Trevor Sanborn is coming home.
Sanborn expects to be on the starting grid in the first Pro Series 40-lap feature of the season Saturday night at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough.
Despite finishing among the top five in PASS North’s first two events of the season, Sanborn will do most of his racing at Beech Ridge.
Last Saturday night while driving one of Richard Moody Racing’s cars, Sanborn finished third in the circuit’s Super Late Model 150-lap race at White Mountain Motorsports Park in North Woodstock, N.H.
On May 1 while driving his own car, Sanborn finished fifth after leading 99 of 150 laps at PASS North’s SLM season opener at Beech Ridge.
Sanborn, 22, of East Parsonsfield, has one good reason for coming off the tour.
“Money,” he said. “It comes down to money. It costs a lot of money to race on the tour.”
Sanborn had some success on the PASS circuit.
He won two PASS South races at Orange County Speedway in Rougemont, N.C. While he didn’t finish among the top 10 in any of the PASS North races he entered, he did lead 324 laps to rank 11th among the tour’s drivers.
Sanborn began his racing career at Beech Ridge where in 2003 at age 15 he became one of the youngest drivers to win a Pro Series event at the track.
“I don’t see this as a step down,” he said. “There’s plenty of competition at Beech Ridge.”
The track’s top competitors in the Pro Series this season include reigning champion Mike Rowe of Turner, three-time champion Bub Bilodeau of Standish, former Pro Stock champion David Oliver of Standish, Bill Rodgers of Old Orchard Beach, Steve Carrier of Saco and Aaron Ricker of Tamworth, N.H.
Sanborn still intends to compete on the PASS North circuit, but only when a tour event doesn’t conflict with a Pro Series race at Beech Ridge.
“I’ve never won a championship at Beech Ridge and I would like to win one,” he said.
UNITY RACEWAY made the switch last weekend to Saturday night racing.
The last-minute change came after the 62-year-old track had published its season schedule, which had most of this season’s events slated for Friday nights.
“With all of the divisions I had here and everybody getting out of work, it made it difficult for everybody to get here on Friday nights,” said race promoter George Fernald Jr.
Racing will start at 5:30 p.m. at Unity on most Saturdays, which should provide plenty of the time to run all the races before the midnight curfew.
Unity will host the Memorial 300 this weekend, with a 200-lap feature for Late Models and a 100-lap feature for Wildcats on Saturday night. Qualifying heats for both races will take place Friday night.
MOTOR MAYHEM returns Saturday night to Oxford Plains Speedway.
The program includes spectator drags, a smoky donut show, a tag team race, a chain race and a fireworks show.
The gate opens at 5:30 p.m., and racing starts at 6:30 p.m.
