Memorial Day events

Honoring our veterans is what it’s all about. The parade begins in Windham Center at 9:15 a.m. on Monday, May 31, followed by ceremonies at the high school. Then it’s off to the Veterans Center for a rededication of Field Allen American Legion Post 148 and an open house – everyone is invited. The Vet’s Center is on Memorial Drive, in back of the Windham Mall.

Chicken cookout

Join the Windham Land Trust on Saturday, June 5, for another wonderful chicken cookout at Friends Church, Route 202, across from the Public Safety Building. Good eating starts at 5 p.m. and will last until the chickens are all gone. Tickets are $10. Each meal includes a half chicken, homemade potato salad, coleslaw, pie, rolls and beverage. Weather permitting, tables will be set up outside as well as inside the church. Takeout containers will also be available.

They’re back!

Lane and Susan Hiltunen have returned from a trip to Augusta, Ga., where they visited Susan’s sister, Betsy, and her husband, Frank Smith. They enjoyed the warm weather and southern hospitality at restaurants like Old McDonald’s Fish Farm, Somewhere in Augusta (chicken wings), Cheddars, Rinehart’s (Alaskan crab legs), Cracker Barrel and Sticky Fingers BBQ. They also stopped in Groton, Conn., where they visited Gerd and Alena Tocker who were stationed with Lane at the American Embassy in Bonn, West Germany. They returned to Windham on May 26 to a completely renovated home.

Library artwork

Artwork by Elizabeth Wisecup is currently on exhibit at the Windham Public Library. The paintings display a variety of topics such as landscapes, wildlife, and still life. The library has had Elizabeth’s work on exhibit here before and it is always a pleasure to see it. Her artwork will be on display through July 30. The library is located at 217 Windham Center Road in Windham. For more information, call the library at 892-1908.

Stiles family reunion planned

Happy Birthday

Ada Ridlon of Raymond celebrated her 90th birthday on May 19 at The Landing Restaurant in Windham. Among those attending were her children, Janet Elliott and her husband Robert of Spring Hill, Fla., son Alvin and his wife Carol of South Casco and her son Norman with his wife Sandra of Raymond. Next, they will hold a family get together with grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Windham Community Garden

Visit the new website, www.windhamcommunitygarden.org, to follow the progress of the gardeners. If you’re interested in gardening, this is the place for more information about the first Community Garden in town!

Caregiver support

On Wednesday, June 2, a Family Caregiver Support and Discussion Group meets from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Windham Hill United Church of Christ. This is a good place for family and friends who are helping an older adult relative or friend. Learn about resources available and get useful ideas from others who are just like you. This is directed by Kate Dulac, Southern Maine Agency on Aging, 1-800-427-7411, ext. 558. Call her for information. The group meets the first Wednesday of each month.

Tea for you

At 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 1, tea will be served – for you – at Windham Public Library. Enjoy a wonderful afternoon tea with friends at the library in the public meeting room. Lovely refreshments, delightful teacups of a wide variety and good company. Everyone welcome. For information, call Laurel or Barbara at 892-1908.

Bean supper

Not too far away, on Tuttle Road in Cumberland, a baked bean supper will be held on Saturday, May 29, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the United Methodist Church. The menu includes baked beans, cole slaw, red hot dogs, rolls, American chop suey, home made pies and beverages. $8 for adults, $4 for youth 12 and under. Handicapped accessible.

Collecting books and DVDs

On Saturday, June 5, the Windham Hill UCC holds the second annual book and DVD sale. For information, call Sylvia Sullivan, 655-3559, or e-mail rsssm@maine.rr.com. Donations of gently used items can be dropped off at Fellowship Hall at the designated place.

Bake sale

Windham Historical Society will hold a bake sale at the June 8 election. Make your choices early and save a little appetite for home made goodies.

Thrift Shop

North Windham Union Church runs a thrift shop downstairs in the church building on Route 302, North Windham. Everything is very neatly organized and reasonably priced. Hours are Saturday 10 a.m. to noon, Wednesday and Thursday from 1-3 p.m.

Win groceries or a kayak!

In order to help offset the cost of the DARE program in Windham, a DARE Stimulus Raffle is being held. Prizes are two $350 oil cards, two $300 grocery cards, two $250 gas cards and a Perception Prodigy recreational kayak! All proceeds will go directly to the DARE program and the raffle winners will be drawn on homecoming weekend at the high school. Prizes have been donated by State Farm Windham office (Tricia Zwirner), Westbrook Auto Service (across from the Prides Corner Drive-in) and Cobb’s Collision and tickets can be obtained from any of those places. July concert dates

Saturdays in July have been marked as the dates for the annual Music on the Hill concerts. The schedule includes Rick Charette on July 10, Side Car Heroes on July 17, The Denny Breau Trio on July 24 and Royal River Philharmonic Jazz Band on July 31. Series ticket price is $40; individual concert prices range from $8 for seniors and children 12 and under to $12 for adults.
