A 24-year-old man from Westbrook who was assaulted in Monument Square in Portland early this morning died of his injuries.
Police say the victim and a woman were walking through Monument Square around 1:25 a.m. and were approached by three males. Portland Police Lt. Gary Rogers said the victim was assaulted and knocked unconscious. He said the men fled the scene as witnesses in Monument Square rushed to aid him. He was transported to Maine Medical Center, where he died today as a result of the injuries.
Rogers said the couple were walking up from the Old Port.
“It was random,” Rogers said. “The guys approached him and her. I don’t know what the intent was.”
Rogers said the man who assaulted the victim was described as Hispanic or Middle Eastern, wearing a yellow shirt and baggy jeans. He said the suspect is 20 to 30 years-old and weighs 130 to 180 pounds.
Police did not release the name of the victim. Rogers said the woman was not harmed. Police are asking if anyone has information, they should call 874-8575.
