WESTBROOK–A 17-year-old from Westbrook has been charged with aggravated assault after his 32-day-old son was found last weekend to have an apparent skull fracture and bruising, according to Westbrook police Capt. Tom Roth.

Police have not released the name of the suspect and have provided few details about the incident because both the father and victim are minors.

However, police said in a statement that the alleged assault took place sometime in the afternoon of Saturday, May 15, at a Cole Street residence. The child was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, and the state Department of Health and Human Services called police the next morning to report the baby’s injuries.

The statement said that contacting police “is standard protocol when a child receives and injury that is questionable or inconsistent with the described circumstances.”

Westbrook police said they began an investigation and interviewed numerous people before arresting the child’s father.
