Don’t look now, but here comes the Westbrook baseball team.
After opening the season a disappointing 1-2, the Blazes have caught fire and ripped off seven wins in a row, running their record to 8-2 on the season and elevating Westbrook to the No. 2 position in the latest Class A Heal Points, right behind Bonny Eagle.
After getting by Sanford in a close 6-5 game on May 13, the Blazes hosted Kennebunk on Saturday and blanked the Rams, 9-0. Westbrook then followed that up with a big 18-6 win over Gorham on Tuesday afternoon.
Against Sanford, the Blazes got all they could handle from the Redskins, as Sanford battled all game and got some late offense with the help of an O.J Martin home run. The Blazes hung on behind the pitching of Matt Wiemer, who threw six innings, and came away with the win. Weimer also delivered offensively against Sanford, blasting two home runs in the contest.
The Redskins got started early with some first inning hits against Wiemer, but only managed to score one run until the late innings, when they found another in the sixth and three more in the seventh against Westbrook relief pitcher Zach Gardiner, who got the save.
Westbrook head coach Mike Rutherford saw the close game against a struggling Sanford ball club as a wake up call for his squad. “We need to get better hitting-wise as a team,” he said. “Right now, we’re getting just enough hitting as a team to contend at the end of a game. Sanford, although they are a decent team, we should be hanging around with them at the end. We had a chance to put them away early and didn’t. We let them hang around and they put a scare in us at the end.”
Rutherford praised Weimer’s performance in Thursday’s game. “Matty Weimer had a great game,” Rutherford said. “He came into the game 0-11 (at the plate). He’s a great kid and obviously he needed to break out. He had two great at bats and gave me six plus great innings on the mound, definitely the star of the game.”
In the game against Kennebunk, Zach Collett led the Blazes’ offense, as he went 3-4 with three RBIs in the contest. Sean Murphy chipped in with a home run and three RBIs while going 3-3 at the plate.
Scott Heath picked up the win for Westbrook, going 5.2 innings while allowing just three hits and striking out 8.
Collett also had a strong game against Gorham on Tuesday as he had three hits and 3 RBIs in the win. Joe Quinlan was the offensive star for Westbrook, going 4-5 with an RBI and four runs scored in the contest. Murphy also added three RBIs.
