As evidence that working harbors are still considered vital in southern Maine, we now have the possibility that the owners of kayaks and other small craft may soon be banned from launching or paddling about in the vicinity of Cape Porpoise Pier.
Working boats appear to be favored at Kennebunkport Town Hall, but it would be a worthwhile accomplishment to preserve access to the water for all. In another context ”“ Goose Rocks Beach ”“ town officials have rightly expressed their intention to guard public rights along the shore.
The police chief, town manager and harbormaster are concerned about the hazards of allowing people to launch near the pier, and risks certainly exist. If the operators of either small craft or large boats are unskilled or inattentive, a dangerous situation could develop.
The other issue ”“ and it is also a serious one ”“ is the lack of parking in the area. It must be a serious annoyance for business owners to see parking spaces taken up for hours by those spending time out on the water.
Such problems are difficult for selectmen to solve in a meeting or two, but perhaps a committee could come up with ideas for making the best use of the area’s limited parking and attractive waterfront. Rather than banning a particular type of craft, the right approach might be to more effectively address the potential safety and parking issues.
Selectmen plan a hearing on May 13 to consider the issue. We’re sure Kennebunkport has many dedicated kayakers and canoists with ideas about how Cape Porpoise can continue to be widely shared and enjoyed.
