YARMOUTH – Yarmouth turned in a solid performance at both ends of the field Monday night to remain undefeated, cruising to an 8-4 Western Maine Conference schoolboy lacrosse win against Cape Elizabeth.
The Clippers, the two-time defending Class B state champions, held Cape Elizabeth without a shot on goal during a 17-minute segment as they ran their record to 4-0.
“It shows we didn’t lose as many players as people thought, and we’re still up there with everyone else,” said Evan Henry, a senior attackman who had a goal and an assist.
Cape Elizabeth (2-2) took a 2-1 lead in the first 10 minutes on goals by Harper Nelson and Teddy Smith, but Yarmouth switched to a zone defense and limited Cape’s scoring chances after that.
“We were intense (on defense) in the first half, but we were little confused,” Yarmouth Coach Craig Curry said. “Their offense was different from what we’ve seen. Their formation was different, so it confused our kids.”
“They didn’t have anyone in the crease, which was different from what we’ve seen, and it was hard to adjust to at first,” Henry said.
“It wasn’t that they were doing anything different from what we thought they were doing,” Curry said, “The dramatic difference is how we played against it. It wasn’t a change in strategy. It was a change in (our) execution.”
Yarmouth used man-to-man defense to eke out a 7-4 win Friday against Falmouth.
“Because of the matchups and the way they run their offense, we had to change up,” Curry said.
Stephen Petrovek, an attackman who earned All-American honors as a junior last season, scored three of his five goals in the second quarter to propel the Clippers into a 5-2 halftime lead.
“(Petrovek) gets into positions where there are openings, and his teammates are unselfish and they get him the ball,” Curry said. “It doesn’t just happen, though. The other kids are doing a lot of great things to create those openings for him. (Cape) obviously focused on him, and he was able to get himself free because his teammates were helping him.”
Mike McCormack and Colby Shields also had a goal and an assist for Yarmouth.
Smith, a junior attackman, scored two second-half goals for the Capers, the defending Western Class B champion.
Yarmouth held a 25-6 edge in shots.
Jack Roos made 18 saves, some of them of the spectacular variety, to keep the Capers close.
“He’s been a starter for close to three years now, and he’s getting confident,” Cape Elizabeth Coach Ben Raymond said. “He likes these big games. He made a lot of great saves tonight. He’s seeing the ball much better, and he’s getting better every day. That’s what we ask.”
The Capers, who opened with an 11-5 loss at Falmouth, continue to improve, said Raymond.
“We’ve definitely progressed,” Raymond said. “We’ve gotten better in a lot of different spots. It’s the same thing as it usually is, it’s just consistency. It’s 15- to 18-year-old kids, and being consistent is a hard thing to do.”
