PORTLAND — A woman who police say is a person of interest in its investigation of bank robbery at the Norway Savings Bank branch on Congress Street was taken into custody this afternoon after a long standoff with Portland police.

Police responded to 1808 Forest Ave. at 8 a.m. on Sunday after receiving tips from the public that a woman shown on surveillance tapes robbing the bank was living there. Police say the woman had threatened to harm herself. Also in the apartment was her 5-month-old son.

The standoff lasted more than six hours. Police Chief James Craig said officers talked to the woman by cell phone throughout the morning. Craig said she did not threaten to harm the child.

Around 2 p.m., police negotiator Eric Nevins carried the woman’s son from the building where she was holed up. Shortly afterward, the woman surrendered to police and was transported to a hospital to be evaluated.

The infant boy was smiling after the ordeal and appeared healthy. He left in a vehicle with family members who were at the scene.
