A 5-year-old boy drowned in the Mousam River in the Springvale area of Sanford this afternoon.

The identity of the boy was not immediately available.

Sanford Fire Department Captain Paul Morrison said the boy had been hiking along the Mousam Way Trail with his parents and at least one sibling when he fell into the water about noon.

When rescuers arrived the boy had been pulled from the surging river. Emergency personnel then pulled out the mother.

The parents and the boy were transferred to Goodall Hospital where the boy died.

The trail is a popular hiking route, Morrison said.
