SAINT JOSEPH’S College is home of the newest Lions Club in Maine, having celebrated its charter night earlier this month. The Sebago Lions Club sponsored the new club and 24 members were inducted. The newly inducted members, advised by Professor Katrina Hoop, included Kristina Anderson, Anne Becker, Erin Brady, Vanessa Brooks, Stacy Burton, Erik Campos, Amber Chembars, Kim DiGiovine, Noah Ebel, Maggie McGraw, Kayla Pazmany, Laura Schools, Maryann Sinewick, Abigail Smith, Mary Jo Stanton, Allison Taylor, Jaimee Thibodeau, Elizabeth Webber, Sarah Williams and Chelsea Wochomurka. Past District Governor Carolyn Gile of the Massebesic Lions Club told these new members that they have joined the largest service organization in the world, with more than 1.3 million members in 205 countries.


PORTLAND

THE SENIOR VOLUNTEER Programs of People’s Regional Opportunity Program will hold spring training for men and women age 55 and older interested in Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs. By joining the program, volunteers can make a difference in someone’s life while having a great time and earning a little extra money. Grandparents volunteer with school children and senior companions are friendly visitors to other seniors. In return, volunteers meeting income guidelines will receive a tax-free stipend, mileage reimbursement and other benefits. For more information about the training session, call 773-0202.

SCHOOLS ON WHEELS, a program of World Vision and The Azande Organization, seeks  to deliver1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to Western Equatoria, in Sudan. Each pack costs $25. The program will help students who, more often than not, attend class outside and write their lessons in the sand. THE DOCUMENTING Maine Jewry project is eeking $7,500 in donations to create an online index to the 1977 and the 2009 interviews of Portland residents covering the 1900s to 1950s. The oral history project adds personal memories and family stories to the hard descriptive data available from the DMJ database. AUGUST

THE MAIN-E-ACTS Baton Twirling Team will participate in New York City’s 249th St. Patrick’s Day Parade March 17. The team was formed in 2004 as a travel component of the Central Maine Twirling Corps supported and offered by the Augusta Recreation Department and the Bangor Parks and Recreation Department. The 17 team members epresent the towns of Augusta, Bangor, Brewer, Bucksport, Hancock, Hermon, Manchester, Orono, Prospect, Readfield, Vassalboro, Whitefield and Windsor.
