ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Philip Gogulla and Derek Whitmore scored third-period goals to lift the Portland Pirates to a franchise-record 11th straight win, a 4-3 victory over the Rochester Americans in front of 5,236 at the Blue Cross Arena.
Gogulla evened the game at three with his ninth goal of the season at 2:15 of the third, and Whitmore put home the winner just over four minutes later.
Gogulla had a pair of goals and T.J. Brennan provided three assists for the Pirates, who improved to 32-16-5-2.
Rochester took a 2-0 first-period lead. Jamie Johnson scored 2:19 in and Clay Wilson added a power-play goal at 10:55.
The Pirates answered with goals by Felix Schutz and Gogulla in the first 6:06 of the second, but Shawn Matthias put the Americans back in front with 4:59 left in the period.
Jhonas Enroth made 23 saves for Portland.
Alexander Salak stopped 25 shots for Rochester, which lost its fourth straight.
