Windham veteran news

Art Stevenson of Pope Road, a veteran of the Merchant Marine, is at Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. A visit from old friends would be nice – or send a cheery card to one of the men who served our country well!

Another local veteran, Charlie Libby, would welcome visitors. He is at Portland Center for Assisted Living, 68 Devonshire St., Portland.

Together for 72 years

Malcolm and Mary Lyons of Windham will celebrate their 72nd wedding anniversary on Friday, Feb. 5. They have spent most of that time in Windham. Family members will be visiting this special couple. Congratulations from us all!

They have been able to purchase some new snowshoes through a grant, but would like to collect more for fourth- and fifth-graders to use. If anyone has new or gently used snowshoes they’d like to donate, please drop them off at the school on Route 302, North Windham.

Kids and the Internet

The Windham PTA is sponsoring the workshop in partnership with the Windham police and the School Department. Topics to be covered include: Physical and legal dangers of Internet use by children; Tools, toys, opportunities and caveats of Internet use; and What the Windham/Raymond School District is doing to protect children. The public is welcome to attend.

Free clothing – for all ages

The newly renovated Windham Clothes Closet is open Fridays from 10 a.m. until noon for Windham residents and residents of neighboring towns. It is located in the lower level of the Human Resources building, on Route 202, across from Friends Church. The new entrance is around the building and on the lower level at the back door. Donations are being accepted and now may be left at the back of the building. All items in the Clothes Closet are free. Seniors who come to the food pantry on Thursday morning may also access the food pantry at that time to avoid multiple trips.

Donations needed

Madeline Roberts has started planning for the 4th Annual Yard Sale on May 8. Did you get a Christmas gift you did not necessarily want? Please don’t throw away the singing fish, dancing plant, or chia pet you may have received – bring it to the clothes closet and food pantry for their yard sale! Also they need small appliances, dish sets, knick-knacks, jewelry, lamps, sports equipment, small furniture or just anything a family can pick up at little cost. This will help raise money for the pantry. The sale in 2009 made $1700, which was designated for Christmas. Thanks to that support, 326 children benefited. It appears 2010 will have more demand for services. Yard sale donations will be accepted now through April 30 for the May 8 sale.

Elder Network meets

Lake Region Elder Network will meet at the Naples Town Hall on Route 302, on Monday, Feb. 8, from 9 to 10 a.m. Help explore the needs in the communities of the Lakes Region, and find out what resources are available and what is needed for adults 60+ in the area towns. The LREN meets on the second Monday each month. Anyone who is interested in elder concerns and issues or would like to offer resources is welcome.

News, please

We know a lot of people in Windham, but we don’t know all the news. We don’t know when people go to the hospital or are recuperating – unless you let us know! Often times, a cheerful card would be welcome. When your group or church or family has an event worth talking about – let us know! All nonprofit organizations can list their meetings here – but please adhere to the deadline (the Friday before the Friday publication date).
