BIDDEFORD — The Fleurent brothers were at it again for the Biddeford hockey team Wednesday afternoon.
Thanks to goals by Brady and Trevor Fleurent, the Tigers were able to defeat Falmouth 3-1 at the Biddeford Ice Arena to remain a perfect 9-0 on the regular season.
The duo entered the game as the two top scorers on the Tigers. Trevor Fleurent, a senior forward, leads the team (and all of Maine Class A Tier I) with 28 points, 15 goals and 13 assists.
Brady Fleurent, a freshman forward, is second in Tier I with 24 points, nine goals and 15 assists.
“A hard fought battle, always is between Falmouth,” Trevor Fleurent said. “It was kind of an early game, it was hard to get going at first, but both teams played pretty well.”
The game was a defensive chess match for more than two periods between two of the top squads in Maine Class A hockey. The Tigers kept the pressure on Falmouth for much of the period until Biddeford took a 1-0 lead on a power play goal with 17 seconds remaining in the first period thanks to a Brady Fleurent wrist shot over the shoulder of Falmouth goalie Jay Hurdman, assisted by Eric Grover and Trevor Fleurent.
Roles reversed for the Tigers in the second period, as Biddeford was forced to spend much of the period in defensive mode due to a four-minute interference/roughing penalty. Biddeford held its own as it entered intermission still with a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers put the offensive pressure back on Falmouth in the third period, and with over three minutes remaining, Biddeford scored on another power play goal, this time on a slap shot by Trevor Fleurent and assited by Brady Fleurent and Nick Fitzgerald.
Falmouth tried to mount a comeback over a minute later, as forward Gabe Hoffman-Johnson knocked a rebound off Biddeford goalie Matt Roy’s pads into the net to make it a 2-1 game.
But with over a minute remaining in the game, Falmouth pulled Hurdman for an extra skater. Seconds later, Tigers forward Craig Anton (the third leading scorer in the Tier I Western Division) made an empty net goal from across the ice, with assists yet again from Trevor Fleurent and defenseman Nick Gagne.
The Tigers entered the game as the number one ranked team in Tier I according to the Maine Principal Association Heal Point standings, while Falmouth, entering the game at 4-2-1, was ranked second.
Trevor Fleurent, a sophomore on the last Biddeford state championship team in 2007-2008, said the underclassmen of the state title team are stepping up to lead the Tigers to another championship.
“It’s kind of similar,” Fleurent said. “I was an underclassman going in, just trying to follow the seniors and what they did. The upperclassman are now trying to lead the team and do as they did.”
The game was the end of a tough three games in the shedule for the Tigers. Biddeford defeated Scarborough 5-2 on Jan. 6, and just snuck by Thornton Academy 3-2 on Jan. 9.
The Tigers still have a tough second half, including a rematch with Falmouth on Jan. 23 and a much anticipated rematch with Thornton Academy on Feb. 3.
Trevor Fleurent said Biddeford will just keep pushing forward.
“We’re just grinding it out,” Fleurent said. “We’ve got a tough schedule coming up. We’re just going to get those wins as best we can.”
