WELLS — It was double trouble that helped provide the Wells girls basketball team win its first game of the season on Tuesday night.
Lilly Colley and Kelsey Bragdon combined to rack up 80 percent of the Warriors’ total score, leading Wells (1-3) to a 55-41 victory over Yarmouth.
Colley, a senior guard, scored her 23 points with outside shooting, drives to the lane and an abundance of free throws.
Colley said she was happy to get the first win of the season out of the way.
“I’m trying to get to the playoffs for my fourth straight year,” Colley said. “We had a slow start, but finally the first win felt great.”
Bragdon, a junior forward, provided strong rebounding and netted almost all of her 21 points with work in the low post.
Colley scored 12 points in the first quarter, helping the Warriors take a 20-10 lead at the end of the quarter. Wells continued scoring in the second quarter with a fast break offense and cruised into halftime with a 33-20 lead.
Yarmouth’s only offensive weapon was forward Morgan Cahill, who scored 15 points on the night, mostly on offensive rebounds.
Beyond Cahill however, the Clippers continued to have shooting woes, and could not stop the Colley and Bragdon scoring combination enough to mount a strong comeback.
“Just play with a lot of heart, play with energy,” Colley said. “Play through whatever, if they chose to play man or zone, they would switch it up. Just play with confidence and just get our first win.”
The win was much needed for Wells, who came out of the gates with an 0-3 record before Tuesday night. The Warriors lost two close matchups with Cape Elizabeth and Lakes Region before losing to Gray-New Gloucester on Dec. 11.
The Warriors, who made the playoffs last season, are dealing with the transition of being a veteran group, that last year had Robert E. Butler award winner and current University of Southern Maine player Brooke Stevens, to a younger team that includes two seniors and five sophomores.
Colley said the team worked on defense and getting refocused recently in practice.
“Just tightening up our defense,” Colley said. “We were feeling awful after our losses. Just getting our heads back into it, gaining confidence and I think we just let it all out today, as a result of just being crushed by [Grey-New Gloucester].”
Colley said Wells will need to continue to work hard in practice to continue on the success of its first win.
“Keep at it at practice,” Colley said. “Have our second string play hard on us, but they played a lot harder. When we run through drills, ”˜Get on us,’ or ”˜Get on me,’ so that in a game, it’s just like a game situation, and help each other out.
