A Scarborough resident died Wednesday after losing control of his car and colliding with another vehicle on a snow-covered road in Edgecomb, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
The victim was identified as Eugene Estes, 62.
The crash occurred on Route 27 shortly after 5 p.m., the sheriff’s office said in a written statement. Estes, who was a courier for NorDx laboratory in Scarborough, was driving southbound in a Honda Civic when he lost control of the car, according to the sheriff’s department. The Honda, which authorities said was owned by NorDx, slid sideways into the northbound lane and struck a 1992 Ford Bronco driven by Parker Long, 22, of Boothbay, the statement said.
Long was transported to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta with facial injuries that did not appear to be life threatening, the sheriff’s office said.
The investigation of the crash is still in the early stages, but the sheriff’s office said deputies suspect Estes may have been driving too fast for the slippery road conditions. It did not appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, but a blood sample was obtained from both drivers as required by law, authorities said. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, the sheriff’s office said.
Estes was headed to St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor to pick up some laboratory specimens, the statement said. There also were some specimens in the vehicle he was driving and the sheriff’s office said that deputies worked with NorDx to preserve them.
NorDx, located on Campus Drive in Scarborough, provides laboratory services to such clients as hospitals and doctor’s offices.
