WELLS — Right spot, right time, left side of the cage.
Abby Fenstermaker’s timely tip in of a feed from Hilary Bouchard sent Wells to a 3-0 win over Fryeburg Academy, Wednesday, in a WMC field hockey contest at Warrior Memorial Field.
Fenstermaker’s tally came 16:58 into the first half and gave Warrior goalie Deanna Gamache all the offensive support she needed for the shutout win.
“We’re just playing our best,” said Fenstermaker, a senior. “Today, we played as a team. We came out, and we won.”
Wells coach Kristin Williams said that dictating the tempo for the entire game was the key to her team’s triumph.
“Typically,” she said, “we play down to an opponent’s level. We don’t play our game. Tonight we did, which I was happy about.”
While the game was still scoreless, Fentermaker sprinted to the left post as the Warrior attack gathered steam.
Following a free hit outside the circle, Bouchard feathered to ball toward Fenstermaker, who in turn rerouted it into the goal.
“We’ve been playing together since the sixth grade, a lot of us,” said Fenstermaker. “We know exactly where everyone is. We know where to be. We pretty much know what to do.”
The slim lead held up until 9:57 into the second half, when Fenstermaker turned playmaker and set up Bouchard for the second goal.
“When we play our game,” said Williams, “we go to the ball. Our sticks are on the ground. All the little things that we go over every single day that sometimes (we) don’t actually execute in a game. For the most part, we did that today.”
Kelsey Lewia finished the scoring 1:39 later.
Sabrina Link had an chance to make it 4-0 after being awarded a penalty stroke, but was thwarted by Fryeburg goalie Katie McGrath.
