Season outlook: Austin takes over a Patriot squad that has had some tough seasons in recent years. Still, Austin said he believes the future is bright for the Gray-New Gloucester football program. “The goal is to improve week to week and develop younger players for the future,” he said.
Boys soccer
Coach: Mike Dehetre
Last year’s record: 4-10
Key players: Dehetre said that the entire roster will play a key role this season
Season outlook: The MPA’s decision to reduce the number of playoff-eligible teams this season is weighing on Dehetre’s mind as the Patriots prepare to open the season. “Playing in the tough Class B Western Maine Conference there is never an off
night in the schedule, and now with the 50 percent rule with tournament play, all
games are important,” he said. “We are a young team with some good veteran
leadership. Hopefully we can be competitive every game and pull out a few
wins.”
Girls soccer
Coach: Dave Miliner
Last year’s record: 2-9-3
Key players: Taylor Damon, Morgan Wilson, Kassie Wilson, Alicia Valente, Meg Dehetre and Taylor Darnell
Season outlook: “We are looking to take the positive steps from last season and build on them not only with improved soccer knowledge, but through better training efforts, conditioning, and team chemistry as well,” Miliner said. “A postseason berth is our goal.”
Field hockey
Coach: Debra Downing
Last year’s record: 1-10-3
Key players: Katie Hotham, Jessica Mitaly and Carrisa Drouin
Season outlook: “This year we are playing a Class C schedule, which we have
never done before,” Downing said. “The team is strong, but I have not seen any of our
opponents. Still, I believe we are going to be a very strong competitor.”
Golf
Coach: Aaron Talon
Last year’s record: 8-2
Key golfers: Cody Edmiston, Tim Pomerleau, Ryan Barton and Lance Nunely
Season outlook: “We graduated six seniors and only return two lettermen,” Talon said. “We have a tough schedule with the addition of Greely and Falmouth this
year. The team’s goal is to finish at .500 and compete at the Western Maine
Conference qualifier.”
Boys and girls cross country
Coach: Adam Zukowski
Key runners: Girls: Laura Getchell, Elizabeth Pflugradt and Tayla Robbins. Boys: Ben
Schauffer, Jackson Marshall, Ethan Ray, Ethan Ridge and Jeremy Holmquist.
Season outlook: “With a solid returning core, the boys will look to improve on last year’s
Performance,” Zukowski said. “Schauffer, Marshall and Ray will lead the boys team. The girls have a good mix of veteran runners and new faces. Newcomers Getchell and Robbins will combine with our top returner Pflugradt to make a formidable top three.”
